Five-star hotels in the region have come together in a new initiative to promote the Algarve as a spa destination with the launch of the first Algarve Spa Week.

The concept will see 10 hotels in the region participating in a week of promotions between October 2 and 9, following similar models already taking place in England, Brazil and the United States.

The initiative is being supported by the Algarve Tourism Board, ERTA, with the aim of encouraging domestic tourists from across the Algarve and Portugal to use the spas in the region and also to increase the number of Spanish visitors to the Algarve for this purpose.

It is also hoped by organisers that the week of promotions, which will include 50 per cent discounts on various spa treatments in participating venues, will help to cement the region as a premier destination for health and welfare tourism.

Discounted prices

Mário Candeias, the director of the Hotel Tivoli Victoria in Vilamoura, said: “We want this initiative to demonstrate the high quality of spas in the Algarve by enabling large numbers of new visitors to the spas thanks to the discounted prices during Algarve Spa Week.”

He added: “The promotions will help to make the region synonymous with lifestyle and health tourism showing the Algarve to be about more than just a destination for sun, sea and golf.”

President of ERTA Nuno Aires said: “We need to be creative and proactive, working with both the public and private sectors to find the best way to continue to make the Algarve Portugal’s main tourist destination.”

Hotels taking part in the first Algarve Spa Week include the Grande Real Sta Eulália in Albufeira, the Real Marina Olhão, Hotel Quinta do Lago and Vila Vita Parc in Porches.

Organisers aim for the Algarve Spa Week, the first of its kind to take place in Portugal, to become an annual event which will combine discounted spa treatments with special accommodation packages to encourage new spa clients in the region.
