As lawn bowls grows in popularity across the region, so too do the number of clubs and greens popping up along the Algarve, with the construction of the latest club in Praia da Luz expected to be ready by early September.
The new club will be known as the Vila da Luz Bowls Club and will be an all-members organisation run by the members in liaison with the Valverde Restaurant in Luz, the business which owns the plot of land where the new green is to be laid.
Stephen Lee, who will be responsible for club membership and assisting the marketing secretary of the club, told the Algarve Resident: “Anybody who has the urge to come along and play is welcome at the club. We have both experienced annual and winter members and would like to encourage beginners, who do not have to wear white to play but will need a flat pair of shoes.”
He added: “Experienced members of the club have volunteers to give free instruction to those who want it, while we will supply basic equipment for free to begin with.”
Funding for the club has come from the members, with social events planned to help boost funds further in the future, while members will be required to pay fees to the club at varying rates according to membership level.
Work on the plot is due to begin on Monday (July 26) and the first construction phase is expected to take six weeks to allow for the base to set fully before games can begin by late August or early September.
Stephen Lee said: “The main structure of the base is being carried out by two local construction firms and the main carpet and underlay is being provided by GreenGauge, the leading supplier of artificial grass in the UK.”
With so many clubs already in existence in the Algarve, members believe that this new club will serve as a central point for bowlers in the west.
“A large nucleus of players from the Algarve and the UK have expressed the need for a local members club in Lagos or Luz. This facility will cut down the travelling time required to reach other clubs but will fulfil the competitive spirit of bowling while giving them the freedom to bowl whenever they like,” said Stephen Lee.
The club also hopes to become part of the wider bowling community of the Algarve and an application to join the league within Algarve Bowls has already been made.
Stephen Lee added: “Our facilities can be inspected and we hope that we will be able to gain entry as winter league bowling has a very important role for residents and visitors and every effort will be made for us to be able to bowl competitively within or outside the league this year.”
